Paula Modersohn-Becker and Fayum mummy portraits
POLÁKOVÁ, Mária
During her stay in Paris, Paula Modersohn-Becker regularly visited Louvre. There, she gradually created the relationship to the Art of the Antics. In my Bachelor?s Thesis, I focus on new creative impulses which the painter thus discovered, and on the period of artworks influenced by the Egyptian mummy portraits created in 1st ? 4th century AD. Paula Modersohn-Becker saw greatness, simplicity and beauty in the Fayum portraits. She tried to achieve a union of these three aspects artistically. The goal of the Bachelor?s Thesis is to determine the role and symbolism of the Egyptian portraits for the society of the artist?s time. I will also pose the question of why and in what way the portraits effected contemporary artists, mainly Paula Modersohn-Becker.
